La Prévention Routière Internationale (PRI) is an international non-governmental and non-profit road safety organisation. It was founded in 1959 to promote cooperation amongst national institutions dealing with road safety. In 2009, PRI celebrated its 50th anniversary.

PRI has a consultative status with the United Nations and the International Transport Forum (the former European Conference of Ministers of Transport), the global platform and meeting place at the highest level for transport, mobility and logistics.

PRI is a signatory of the European Road Safety Charter.

It has working relations with the European Commission, the World Health Organization (WHO) and international organisations including Eurosafe, Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), Forum of European Road Safety Research Institutes (FERSI), European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), FIA Foundation and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM).

PRI is member of the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) and the Global Alliance for Road Safety NGOs.

PRI is an international organisation with more than 55 members in over 45 countries. Many PRI Members are the leading national traffic safety institutions or ministries dealing with road safety in their country. PRI membership is open to organisations and individuals as well.

Vision & mission

PRI demands zero tolerance for road victims. Every victim is one too many. It strongly advocates that road safety is a shared responsibility of all citizens and stimulates active involvement of citizens in road safety.

In the opinion of PRI, everybody has the basic right of safe mobility. The mission of PRI is "Safe mobility for everyone", with a priority for vulnerable road users, young people, low- and middle income countries and countries in transition.

PRI adopts the concept of Vision Zero. Engineering and enforcement are necessary to encourage safe behaviour. Road users have their own responsability. Therefore, education in the broadest sense of the word is indispensable as well. Good international cooperation to which PRI contributes, facilitates the process of sustainable improvement of road safety.

Main activities

PRI's main activities are transferring knowledge and experiences (best practices, worse cases, developments), advocacy, raising awareness for road safety and lobbying decision makers. PRI (co-)organises regional conferences, world congresses and a yearly Road Safety Forum. For its members, PRI sets up traineeships, Road Safety Courses and consultancy activities. PRI regularly distributes declarations, resolutions and press releases.

On the PRI website video's and TV spots are available See under "Videos". PRI also was the initiator of the EU-project VAMOS and it was a supporter of the finished CAST project (Campaigns and Awareness-raising Strategies in Traffic Safety), a project initiated by the European Commission to enhance road safety by means of effective road safety campaings.
